Farmington, CT (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) www.osha.gov investigated the scene where a worker suffered fatal injuries when he was struck in the head by a steel I-beam in the basement of a house that is under construction on Wednesday morning, November 4, 2009 announced NBC Connecticut.

Police reported the accident took place at 9:30 a.m. in the basement of a newly built home in Farmington. The house where the accident occurred was in the unfinished basement of a newly built home in a neighborhood in Birmington Circle.

The steel I-beam struck the man in the head with no warning. The other workers at the scene immediately lifted the beam from the severely injured worker. Emergency medical services (EMS) helicopter transported the man to the Hartford Hospital to be treated for a severe head injury.

The man’s injuries proved fatal upon arrival. Local police and fire departments continued to investigate the fatal incident along with OSHA officials. Police did not release the man’s identity due pending notification of his family.

According to Connecticut’s Department of Labor Division of the Occupational Safety and Health http://www.ctdol.state.ct.us/osha/osha.htm released in September, 5071 construction workers were fatally injured on the job across the nation in 2008. There were 28 recorded deaths due to construction accidents in Connecticut alone.
