New York crane beam falls, kills operator!

New York Construction Accident Attorneys report a crane beam fell and killed Queens’s construction worker at New York City Throngs Neck Bridge reconstruction site.

Queens, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – a construction worker operating the crane boom on Throgs Neck Bridge was killed when the beam of the crane fell off killing the operator, reported New York Daily News.NYPD identified the operator as 48-year-old William Barnes, who was right next to the crane running the hydraulic boom to maneuver the crane, when the steel beam broke loose and landed on the construction workers head and neck.

The New York City Fire Department Chief Joe Downey reported that the heavy piece of machinery landed on the construction worker’s neck killing him at the scene. William Barnes was an electrician of Tri-State Electric Contracting, a company based out of Rockland County, which had been subcontracted for 97 million dollar renovations of the Thogs Neck Bridge roadway. The Tri-State Electric Contracting president, Joe Donato, expressed his condolences to the family and his regrets about the unexpected accident.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has sent investigators to look into the fatal work-related accident. Metropolitan Bridges and Tunnels organization (MTA) temporarily shut down a lane to the Bronx on the Throgs Bridge due to the accident.

The company supervising the whole Bridge project is the New Jersey Contracting Company E.E. Cruz & Co. The Contractor has been issued citations from OSHA regarding safety violations for other situations in the history of the company.
