Wrongful Death Claim Against The City of New York Settles for $8.7

New York City Injury News — A wrongful death claim that resulted from a State Island Ferry crash in 2003 was recently settled for $8.7 million.

The widow of Jon Healy brought the claim against New York City. Mr. Healy was one of eleven killed in the crash that injured over 50 others. The accident occurred after the ferry failed to come to a stop when reaching the dock, and crashed at a high speed. The pilot of the boat was found to be fatigued and also on pain medication during the time of the crash. The pilot was charged and pleaded guilty to manslaughter as a result of negligence, and received an 18-month prison sentence.

The wrongful death settlement was among the highest ever achieved in New York State. New York personal injury law has provisions for those injured in this type of accident, and also permits wrongful death claims for the families of the deceased. Victims injured in the 2003 accident may require the assistance of a personal injury attorney to pursue and receive the compensation they may be entitled to under law.
