On October 15, 2003, a vessel carrying 1,500 passengers, belonging to the fleet of Staten Island Ferries, went crashing into a concrete pier at full speed, killing 11 and injuring many on board.

The ferry’s pilot, Richard Smith passed out at the controls as a result of taking a combination of painkillers and cold medicine. His conduct was admittedly reckless and negligent. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Lawyers for Kathy Healy, the widow of James Healy, a man who died as a result of the ferry crash, announced an $8.75 million settlement on behalf of the family. The settlement was reached with the City on the day before the trial.

James Healy leaves behind 4 children as well as his wife Kathy.
