Girls Voluntarily Sweatshirts Recalled by New York Manufacturer - Case of defective product

June 21, 2008 (NewYorkInjuryNews.com - Product Liability)

New York, New York (New York Injury News) — A recall was recently announced for hooded sweatshirts for girls distributed by Liberty Apparel Company Incorporated, located in New York, New York. The Jewel brand sweatshirts have been deemed as a potential strangulation hazard for young children. The recall was a voluntary one by the distribution company, as announced by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Approximately 12,000 of the products have been placed on the market. Manufactured in India, the items have been sold nationwide at Marshalls and other retailers of children’s clothing. The average price of the sweatshirt is $10. The drawstring component located on the hood of the clothing item is the basis of the recall, due to it potentially causing strangulation if children get them tangled around the neck. Those who have purchased, or are in possession of the recalled hooded sweatshirt are advised to return the items to Liberty Apparel to receive a refund, or remove the drawstring component before use. For those with additional inquiries, Liberty Apparel Company can be contacted by calling 212-768-3030, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (Eastern Time).

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is an agency that helps protect consumers from being sold or provided products that are hazardous or defective. Individuals who do become injured by defective or hazardous products may have a legal course of action against the product’s distributor, manufacturer, or other related party. Individuals can consult with an attorney who specializes in personal injury in their state in the event they do sustain injuries or damages from a defective product.
